What is a net-zero building?

A net-zero building is designed to produce as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year. This balance is achieved through a combination of energy efficiency measures and the use of renewable energy sources, ensuring that the building's overall energy consumption is neutralized by its energy production.

  Net-zero is also a key global objective for addressing climate change, aiming to limit global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. Achieving net-zero involves balancing the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere with an equivalent amount removed, effectively reducing the net impact on climate.

All net-zero carbon definitions emphasise the importance of reducing emissions before offsetting them. This includes cutting carbon emissions as much as possible and addressing indirect, or embodied, carbon (Scope 3 emissions) before utilising carbon removal strategies to achieve a balance.

Since its formation in 2004 up to 31 March 2023, Salix has helped public sector organisations commit to more than 22,000 projects by administering £3.3 billion of funding, with projects saving 1.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

The Salix funding schemes enable the public sector and housing to reduce carbon emissions in line with the UK Government’s commitment to become net-zero by 2050.

Salix helps from delivery, finance, to carbon and tech offer a range of expertise designed to help organisations overcome the challenges they face as they deliver their projects. They will help organisations meet their deadlines and deliver incredible projects that will benefit the communities they serve.

The schemes delivered provide funding for energy efficiency and heat decarbonisation projects for public sector buildings as well as the housing sector.

The programmes are dedicated to reducing carbon emissions and supporting the government’s ambitious net-zero targets. In England, the schemes include the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, Home Upgrade Grant and the Low Carbon Skills Fund.
