Ideally, you should switch on your heating system at regular intervals during the warmer months to ensure it continues to function properly.

Cold Radiators & Non-Hot Taps

First of all, check your thermostat is actually on, ideally between 17 and 20 degrees. If the radiators don’t warm up, go to the programmer and make sure both central heating and hot water are on.

Check that the system is supplied with electricity; if not, the heating fuse may have blown.

If the issue persists, check the motorised diverter valve, located next to your boiler. This valve controls the flow of heated water. Turn it off and on again.

Still no luck? Then the problem could be the pump. This device forces hot water down the flow pipe to the radiators and taps. Turn this off and see if there is any sign of a problem; mechanical failure or blockage are common issues. If it looks clogged with dirt, it could require a clean.

Strange Noises Coming From Boiler

Here we have a pair of Viessmann boilers installed in a community centre in Nottingham. We removed an old in-efficient floor standing commercial boiler. The old system was in very poor condition and very in-efficient. The client also had very limited control over the system which led to poor comfort levels.

The system consists of two Viessmann system boilers, low loss header, three Grundfoss circulation pumps that feed three seperate circuts, Honeywell zone valves, Magna clean filter and a 120l unvented hot water cylinder. There was also a secondary hot water return pump installed on the how water circuit to allow for quick response times at the hot taps.

There was a new circuit installed for the main hall which consists of 6 Myson Hi Line fan heaters. We connected onto the existing radiator circuit which is controlled via it’s own circuit.

The system was fitted with a Honeywell internet control kit. Along with the A rated efficient boilers these have provided much greater control and efficiency for the occupants.

The client was very happy with this project and the system is running very well.

Here is a commercial plant room refurbishment we are currently undertaking at a school in West Bridgford Nottingham.

We are installing 2 Hamworthy Purewell commercial boilers. All pipework and plumbing is being renewed within the plant room.

A new welded gas supply has been installed along with gas shut off solenoid.

The boilers will be feeding two circuits, fed from a new low loss header that has been made on site.

There is also a new BMS control panel to be installed as part of the project.

This new system will give the site great energy efficiency savings, control and comfort.

Change Heating Industry Standards

So the big question what is boiler plus? Boiler plus is a new initiative that is being introduced following a consultation period by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Boiler Plus comes into force on the 6th April 2018

These new standards address the energy efficiency of heating systems and have increased the requirement for installers and manufacturers alike to be more energy efficient.

The new legislation will initially start in England and has been incorporated into Approved Document L of the Building Regulations.

Boiler Plus requires all new installations of natural gas combination boilers to incorporate one of the following additional efficiency measures –

  1. Flue gas heat recovery systems
  2. Weather compensation
  3. Load compensation
  4. Smart controls featuring automation and optimisation functions


Boiler Plus will only apply to combination boilers as it has been deemed too complex and costly to homeowners to incorporate the more energy efficient controls to “system” and “regular” boilers. This being said as part of the changes all boilers must now incorporate time and temperature controls as a minimum.

How do these controls increase efficiency?

Flue gas heat recovery systems recycle wasted heat from the flue and use this “wasted” energy to pre heat the cold water coming into the boiler. These systems aren’t very common as they take between 13-39 years to pay for themselves as a company we have not installed any of these due this reason.

Weather compensation is a way of modulating a boilers output (flow temperature) to match the heat loss of a building which is influenced by the outdoor temperature.

Load Compensation modulates the boilers output using the reference rooms temperature. As the room reaches near the thermostats set point the boiler reduces its output (flow temp) to increase efficiency and comfort as the reduced temperature also stops the room becoming too warm after the room reaches temperature. (Radiators at maximum temp when the room reaches set point will continue to give off heat and heat the space past the set point)

Smart controls generally have numerous features that can increase efficiency like optimisation and automation. Optimisation is where the room thermostat learns how long it takes the property to heat up and adjusts the on times as required to get the property up to the required temperature on time. Automation is where the thermostat brings the boiler on/off depending on whether there is anyone home or not which means the heating system will not operate more than necessary.

What does this mean for existing boilers?

Like when the compulsory requirement to install condensing boilers was introduced in 2005 Boiler Plus only applies to new installations. Unlike the condensing boiler mandate Boiler Plus only applies to Combination boilers.

What about oil boilers?

Currently the only regulation under boiler plus for oil boiler installations is that they have time and temperature controls.

How do Miller Freeman plan to comply with boiler plus?

As boiler installation specialists we like to keep up to date with all the latest technology and have incorporated high efficiency controls into our installations for the last few years.

Over 90% of our installations over the last few years are boiler plus compliant. The only times we haven’t incorporated the more advanced controls is when we’ve specifically been asked not to.

Although boiler plus only requires combination boilers to have the extra level of efficient controls we try to incorporate them into all of our heating systems where possible.

We achieve this in a number of ways on system boilers but mainly by using Worcester Bosch hot water priority kits and Worcester Bosch intelligent controls which give us maximum comfort, energy efficiency and a massive 10 year guarantee on the whole kit.
